Support Group Policy

For families in need of parental support, whether online or in person, our national support groups are indispensable. To ensure maximum benefit for all participants, it is essential to adhere to the following policy: the chair, facilitator, or organizer of the group holds the authority within the meeting.

Policy for Support Groups (in person and online) under Chatham House Rules

  1. Purpose: The purpose of the confidential support groups is to provide a safe and supportive environment for participants to discuss sensitive topics related to family dynamics, separation, and parenting, while adhering to the principles of Chatham House Rules.
  1. Chatham House Rules: All discussions within the support groups will be governed by the Chatham House Rules. This means that attendees are free to use the information received during discussions, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speakers may be disclosed outside the group without explicit consent.
  1. Confidentiality: Attendees of the support groups must uphold the confidentiality of all discussions held within the group. Any information shared during meetings should not be divulged outside of the group without explicit consent from the individuals involved.
  1. Membership: While attendees are encouraged to consider joining Both Parents Matter for additional support and resources, membership in the organisation is not obligatory. Attendees may choose to join or not based on their own discretion and needs.
  1. Respectful Communication: All attendees are expected to communicate respectfully and courteously with one another. Disagreements are to be handled with maturity and sensitivity, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect within the group.
  1. Non-Discrimination: Discrimination of any form is strictly prohibited within the support groups, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability. All attendees must adhere to principles of inclusivity and respect for diversity.
  1. Supportive Environment: The support groups aim to create a supportive and empathetic environment where attendees feel comfortable sharing their experiences and seeking advice or assistance from others facing similar challenges.
  1. No Legal or Medical Advice: Attendees are discouraged from providing legal or medical advice within the support groups. While sharing personal experiences and insights is encouraged, professional advice should be sought from qualified professionals when necessary. The promotion or advertising of any kind is strictly prohibited and we do not endorse any specific “McKenzie Friend” services.
  1. Confidentiality Breach Protocol: Any breach of confidentiality will be taken seriously and may result in expulsion from the support group and/or charity. Attendees are encouraged to report any breaches to the group facilitator or organiser.
  1. Exit Protocol: Attendees are free to leave the support groups at any time. However, it is encouraged to inform the group facilitator or organiser beforehand, if possible, to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the confidentiality of ongoing discussions.
  1. Review and Amendments: This policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure its effectiveness and relevance. Amendments may be made as necessary with input from the attendees and group facilitator or organiser.

By participating in the confidential support groups, attendees agree to abide by the rules and principles outlined in this policy.
